Assaka / Asmaka Mahajanapada

The sixteen (16) Mahajanapadas were Ganatantras / republics which flourished in ancient India during 6th -4th centuries BCE. The 16 Mahajanapadas stretched over vast lands between Gandhara to Anga- present day Afghanistan and the eastern part of ancient Bharatavarsha. ( Anga, Assaka or Asmaka, Avanti, Chedi, Gandhara, Kambhoja, Kashi, Kosala, Kuru, Magadha, Malla, Matsya, Panchala, Surasena, Vajji and Vatsa).

The Assaka or the Asmaka mahajanapada included areas of present day Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra and the Dakshina region. The capital of Assaka was thought to be located at Pratisthan or Paithan in Maharashtra or Potana or Potali, which roughly corresponds to Bodhan in Telangana. Assaka was outside Madhyadesa, and was adjacent to Avanti.  It was located on the southern high road, the Dakshinapatha.

 Avanti Mahajanapada      

 Avanti was an important kingdom of western India, the Avanti region north of Narmada had it’s capital in Ujjaini, and the Avanti region south of Narmada had it’s capital at Mahishmati. The region corresponds to modern day Madhya Pradesh.
